Mister Rogers talks about sitting down and standing up. He uses a toy car garage with an elevator and a ramp to illustrate the motions of up and down. Mr. McFeely takes Mister Rogers to a building that has an escalator and elevator and they ride in an open-glass elevator that allows them to see outside. Mister Rogers says you can use your imagination if you do not have toys. He sings “It’s You I Like” and says that your real friends like you for who you are rather than what you have. He says it’s a good feeling when you realize you can be a real friend yourself. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Handyman Negri plays the guitar while King Friday’s pet birds dance. Then he goes to Corney’s factory to operate a pulley and move some rockit chairs up and down for Corney. They sing together, “I’m a Man Who Manufactures.” Handyman helps Mr. McFeely deliver a hydraulic platform to Lady Elaine at the museum. It has a pedal that makes it go up and down. X the Owl talks about flying and Cornflake gives a rocking guitar holder to Handyman.
Mister Rogers plays with wooden blocks and then goes to Negri’s Music Shop to see wooden instruments. Also there is Bob Speca, a man who sets up dominoes and knocks them down. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Robert Troll is looking for King Friday so he can make him aware of a call from Mayor Maggie. He pretends to be a bird and is lifted into the air by Lady Elaine’s lift.
Mister Rogers talks about up and down movements and demonstrates them with his eyes, arms, and his sweater zipper. He goes outside to show a see-saw and as he reflects, we see a video of things that move up and down, such as a flag and children playing on slides and jumping rope. Marilyn Barnett and Mister Rogers see-saw together then do some exercises. Kara, one of Marilyn’s students, shows some ballet movements. Mister Rogers talks about Chuck Aber’s feeling of loss, then makes two paper birds and attaches them to straws. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, King Friday asks Mayor Maggie and Chuck Aber to organize dancing lessons for his birds. The King provides tutus for the birds as well. Lady Elaine’s new elevator is making her museum go up and down instead of around. While Aber goes to investigate, Robert Troll comes by and takes the birds for a walk. Aber returns and begins searching for the two birds on sticks with tutus.
Mister Rogers talks about music and demonstrates on the piano how notes go up and down on a scale. He shows a picture of Richard Stoltzman, a father who plays the clarinet. At Negri’s Music Shop, Joe shows a collection of clarinets. Richard Stoltzman has left a note on the music stand. He is waiting for Mister Rogers on his front step and gives him a Linzer torte pie. Richard explains how his father helped him start playing the clarinet, and they talk about Richard’s children and expressing feelings in music. Richard plays and improvises on “I’ll Think of You.” In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Lady Aberlin measures the castle for her research and King Friday asks her if she knows of a good dancing school for his birds. Lady Aberlin tells Daniel that she thought of him while she was away on business, then sings to him. He helps her measure his clock. Lady Elaine hires Old Goat as her new elevator operator for the museum. Lady Aberlin helps Handyman search for the birds. Mister Rogers talks about how everyone is worried about the birds and they are searching high and low for them. He says it takes time and work to learn to play an instrument as well as Mr. Stoltzman does. He feeds the fish, takes his torte out of the refrigerator, and says he can only give his television neighbors food to think about. He sings ” There are Many Ways.”
Mister Rogers talks about balloons and is visited by Bruce Franco who is a balloon artist and sculpts balloons into animal shapes. They talk about how difficult it is for Mister Rogers to even blow up a balloon, but how easy everything looks for Bruce. Bruce explains that he has been doing this for a long time and has lots of practice. Mr. McFeely shows a video of his balloon ride with Maggie Stewart. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Lady Aberlin, the Director of Research, lets Grandpere use her binoculars, and he sees something strange that looks like balloons and birds. Neighbor Aber and Lady Aberlin talk about the missing birds and Aber decides to make another attempt to fix the elevator in the museum. While he is gone. Mayor Maggie calls on a walkie-talkie to report that the birds have been spotted with Robert Troll, and that Old Goat is being missed by his friends in Northwood. Chuck fixes the elevator in the museum, and Lady Elaine says Old Goat is no longer needed to operate the elevator, but she will pay him before he leaves. Robert Troll arrives with the birds. Everyone is called to the castle by the king, and Robert Troll shows how the birds can do a balloon dance. Mister Rogers talks about how everything is fixed in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe. He plays with a couple of the balloons that Bruce left him and says it is special to use whatever is handy to make up your own pretend. He feeds the fish and says it is important to take care of live things like fish. He sings “You Are Special.”
