Mr McFeely arrives with a video: “How people make colored markers.” Mister Rogers discusses pretending and shows a variety of people’s hands then draws a silhouette of his hand. He talks about beauty in differences. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, King Friday converses with his bird, Mimus Polyglottos. Mr. McFeely asks why the king has wooden birds. He responds that they require little care and he can pretend they are alive. Mr. McFeely has a package for X the Owl. The king is curious about the contents. Privacy issues are discussed. Mr. McFeely attempts to deliver the package. X is out. Henrietta Pusycat offers to open the package. More privacy discussion follows. Henrietta speculates as Mayor Maggie arrives. They speculate together, then Maggie sings and hand-signs a song. X arrives; the package is opened. It contains a tripod. They pretend to make a viewer for the tripod. Maggie visits the king. She tells him what the package held.
Mister Rogers has a telescope and explains its use. He goes outside to try it out. Bob Trow arrives with his imaginary dog. They talk about pretending. Bob Trow had a hand family as a child, and a pretend language, and a telescope. Mister Rogers sings about pretending. Mr. McFeely arrives with a large carton and talks about using it for play. Mister Rogers says nobody can see another person’s pretend. He talks about using imagination when real people are not available. He sings about taking oneself in hand when we are lonely. He plays with sand and cups and imagines a sand menagerie. He talks about feelings and growing. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Robert Troll speaks with his imaginary pet, Gloria. Queen Sara can’t see the imaginary pet but believes in it anyway. Mr. McFeely arrives with a package for X the Owl. Cornflake S. Pecially asks Mr. McFeely to try out a rocker which collapses under him. The package contains directions and the box is a viewer. X is disappointed at first, but he likes it when he tries it. Robert Troll and Daniel S. Tiger talk about and share their imaginary friends. King Friday summons Robert to the castle and says he wants to see his imaginary pet.
Mister Rogers demonstrates an umbrella and mentions the dangers of umbrellas – points, etc. Mr McFeely arrives with a video about how people make umbrellas. Mister Rogers says imagination is the best way to learn about things. Mister Rogers visits Tome Cousin at his dance studio. He and his troupe perform a dance using umbrellas. Tome explains that he first imagined the dance. Mister Rogers plays peek-a-boo with an umbrella. He talks about the rewards of practice. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, it’s raining. Chuck Aber visits Cornflake S. Pecially, who is having a special sale. He is selling umbrellas connected to rocking chairs. He rocks while he imagines himself to be flying. Mayor Maggie joins him singing and signing. Henrietta disturbs Chuck’s reverie. She demonstrates X’s new viewer. Mister Rogers explains that the viewer can’t see other people’s imagination. He discusses privacy of thoughts – they must be verbalized before others can know them.
Mister Rogers imagines someone sitting on a chair. He reads to the imaginary person. He talks about imagining things in the clouds. He shows another book. The pages are blank. The reader is to imagine what the pages could hold. Mr McFeely arrives wearing a funny hat. Mister Rogers tries it on. Marilyn Barnett arrives for exercise. She puts Mister Rogers and Mr. McFeely through their paces. Mr. McFeely informs Mister Rogers of a suprise later at Brockett’s Bakery. Mister Rogers talks about pretending and imagination. He goes to Brockett’s Bakery where Chef Brockett is making sandwiches with happy and sad faces. Back at home, Mister Rogers washes his hands then makes a face sandwich of his own and says he will give it to somebody who is hungry. He says that people need real food, not imaginary food, and that being helpful is rewarding. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Handyman Negri helps Prince Tuesday bring his Tome doll to life. Tome dances. Cornflake S. Pecially asks Handyman to deliver an umbrella rocking chair to Daniel’s imaginary friend, Malcom Apricot Dinko. Handyman speaks with X the Owl about imaginary friends, then makes his delivery to Daniel. The imaginary friend is grateful. Handyman speaks with King Friday about his day.
Mister Rogers has a Mister Rogers doll. He explains that it isn’t a live person. Mister Rogers recalls the “I’ve got your nose” game. He explains that we’re not like dolls and our parts aren’t easily removed. Maggie Stewart arrives and shows Mister Rogers some sign language. She invites him to the bakery later. Bob Trow drops off a present for the singer. Mister Rogers explains that everybody must make up their own imaginary friend. He goes to the bakery. Ella Jenkins is performing for a group of children. They pantomime many activities. Mister Rogers speaks more about imagination preceeding invention. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Mayor Maggie and Queen Sara are discussing Queen Sara’s charity activities. Robert Troll seeks help for Lady Elaine. Her museum won’t stop spinning. Lady Elaine blames Daniel S. Tiger’s imaginary friend for the problem. Chuck invites Maggie to a picnic with himself, Daniel, and Daniel’s imaginary friend. Lady Elaine lied! She did it because she wanted to go on a picnic herself. Chuck says all she had to do was ask.
